Living with multiple sclerosis in my family is no easy task. My father was diagnosed a decade ago, in 2001. That moment was like a breath of fresh air before a long trip underwater. He finally had an answer for those health problems that had been plaguing him for a long while – constant tiredness, loss of vision, rashes and hives all over his body. But Pandora’s box had been opened, and we could never close it again. Knowing what my father was up against, I watched and participated in an incredible adventure that would not only transform his life, but mine as well.
My dad believes that many factors affect MS, but only three are under his control – diet, exercise, and lifestyle. So he worked to perfect all three, and his condition improved tenfold. He started eating healthier foods, exercising, and cutting down the stress in his life. He inspired our family to do the same.
I strongly believe that I am blessed. Though our family has been touched by the grip of multiple sclerosis, it has forced me and my family to radically change our lives for the better. We eat much healthier (and more delicious) foods. We go out to exercise regularly and we’re able to spend more time with each other, enjoying those precious moments. I’d say that out of this curse that affects many, my family and I have found a small blessing – and I hope that our story can inspire others to find that blessing too.
