NEW CHANGES TO RURAL PARA TRANSPO ROUTES AND FARES

On January 9th, 2012, various changes have taken place to rural service provided by Para Transpo. These changes include:

  • Rural flat rate of $8.25 per passenger, including companions, for a one-way trip between a rural zone and the urban transit area.  This fare does not apply to the customer's attendant or support person ( an individual who accompanies a person with a disability in order to help with communication, mobility, personal care, medical needs, or access to goods or services). Attendants will continue to be able to travel with Para Transpo customers at no additional charge. Rather, it applies only to a travelling companion who is accompanying the customer.
  • Trips from a rural address to another rural address will no longer be available. The City is working with rural community resource centres to look at other transportation alternatives for persons with disabilities travelling from rural setting to rural setting.
  • Transit passes will no longer be accepted.
  • Only cash or bus tickets accepted as valid fare on rural service.  Bus tickets will only be worth their face value of $1.30 each on rural service. A combination of cash and tickets can still be used. For example: 4 bus tickets (worth $5.20) + $3.05 cash = $8.25.
  • These changes are in addition to the new fully-accessible OC Transpo Rural Shoppers' bus routes that will start January 9.

Para Transpo will be reporting to the Transit Commission later in 2012 on how cooperative arrangements are developing with rural community resource centres as well as monitoring how many rural trips are being booked.

More details can be found on the OC Transpo site by clicking here .
