Legacy giving is a form of charitable giving that allows you to make a gift to the MS Society in the future without substantially affecting your income today.  There are various legacy giving options:

Bequests
The most popular form of legacy gift, a bequest is a gift that you make to the MS Society through your will. It allows you to support the MS Society’s mission, while not touching the assets and funds that you need now. More..

Life Insurance
Gifts of life insurance are the 2nd most popular legacy gift. There are two main ways to give a gift of life insurance: you can name the MS Society as the beneficiary of the policy or as the owner and beneficiary of the policy. This type of gift allows people of modest means to make a gift of sizable proportions with only a small annual or monthly payment. In addition, there is a tax credit available for immediate tax relief. More.

Securities
By donating securities that have increased in value since their purchase, the donor reduces the income tax they would pay for cashing in the security and receives a receipt for the full market value of the security. More.

Four years ago, I gave what was probably the largest donation of my entire life. But it was also the easiest! Because (ha, ha!) I am not giving it during my lifetime!

Charitable Gift Annuities
This type of gift allows you to receive income while giving a sum of money to the MS Society.  With this type of gift, you will receive predetermined, regular income payments for life, and most of this income is tax-free. More.

Residual Interest
In this type of legacy gift, an item of value (such as property) is deeded to the MS Society, but you retain the use of this property for life or a term of years. The donor is entitled to a tax receipt for the present value of the property at the time the gift is made.

Charitable Remainder Trusts
In a charitable remainder trust, you give an asset such as stocks, bonds, or real estate through a trust agreement.

RRSPs or RRIFs
You can name the MS Society as a direct beneficiary for your RRSP, RRIF, or Canada Pension assets and receive tax benefits as a result.

If you have already created a legacy gift and you wish to let us know about your gift, please take a moment to fill out our Statement of Intent form. Any information you provide will remain strictly confidential.
