RONA holds the Keys to a Cure for multiple sclerosis
Target set at $90,000
April 27,
2006 – Toronto – For
the second year in a row, RONA inc. (TSX: RON), the leading
Canadian distributor and retailer of hardware, home renovation
and gardening products, will be selling “Keys to a Cure” at
checkout counters in support of the Multiple Sclerosis Society
of Canada.
The paper keys will be sold for $2 each and offered to RONA
customers at checkout. The promotion will take place in RONA
stores throughout Canada during May, MS Awareness Month. The
program is expected to raise $90,000 and all proceeds will
be donated to the MS Society.
“Our involvement in this program symbolizes our desire to end MS,“ said
Robert Dutton, president and CEO of RONA. “There is research taking place
in this country that may hold the key to a cure and that’s
something we very much want to be a part of.”
Last year, the Keys to a Cure campaign raised over $87,000
and RONA officials believe $90,000 is within their grasp.
RONA is also the title sponsor of the RONA MS Bike Tour which
is the largest cycling series run by a not-for-profit organization
in Canada with 21 events from coast-to-coast. Since RONA began
their sponsorship, funds raised from the event have increased
from $4.9 million in 2003 to $6.5 million in 2005.
“RONA’s commitment to end MS and help those impacted
by it has been extraordinary,” said Alistair Fraser, president
and chief executive of the MS Society. “It seems appropriate
that two uniquely Canadian organizations are working closely
together to stop a disease so prevalent in this country.”

About multiple sclerosis and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of
the brain and spinal cord. It is the most common neurological
disease of young adults in Canada. Most people with MS are
diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 40, and the unpredictable
effects of MS last for the rest of their lives. The MS Society
provides services to people with MS and their families and
funds research to find the cause and cure for this disease.
