Turning a Page in the Fight Against Multiple Sclerosis

CIBC joins Scholastic Canada to sponsor $1.6 million fundraising and awareness program

Toronto – As the 2003-04 MS Read-A-Thon vaults into its 27th year, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada is proud to announce that CIBC will join Scholastic Canada as a program sponsor. Last year, more than 43,000 students raised $1.64 million dollars for MS research and services.

“The MS Read-A-Thon is more than just a fundraiser,” says Alistair Fraser, president and chief executive of the MS Society of Canada. “We hope that by promoting reading and awareness of MS, we are planting the seeds of life-long learning. We are proud to have two of Canada’s most recognizable names be a part of this outstanding program.”

For 2003-04, CIBC will provide funding for program costs and Scholastic Canada will continue to provide book libraries and gift certificates to top fundraising schools and students in each province as they have for the past 17 years.

The MS Read-A-Thon encourages students to read as many books or news/magazine articles within a prescribed reading period. As they read, students collect pledges based on the number of books or articles they’ve read, or on how long they’ve read. Since the program began in 1977, more than 5 million elementary-school students have read 25 million books and over $37 million has been raised for multiple sclerosis research and services.

For more information about the MS Read-A-Thon and how you or your school can become involved please call 1-800-268-7582 or visit www.msreadathon.com.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. It is the most common neurological disease of young adults in Canada. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40, and the unpredictable effects of MS last for the rest of their lives. The MS Society provides services to people with MS and their families and funds research to find the cause, prevention, treatment and cure for this devastating disease.
