Medical Update Memo
July 30, 2009
Summary
In people with MS, the presence of fatigue and depression may significantly reduce quality of life. The authors of this study used a questionnaire to investigate the impact of regular physical activity on fatigue and depression scores in a large population with MS. They found that people who did regular physical activity had more favourable scores in fatigue, depression and quality of life. The results of this study are in keeping with the suggested beneficial effects of exercise in MS. Health Qual Life Outcomes. 2009 Jul 20;7(1):68. [Epub ahead of print]
Details
The purpose of this study was to compare fatigue, depression and quality of life scores in persons with MS who do (Exercisers) and do not (Non-exercisers) regularly participate in physical activity.
A cross-sectional questionnaire study of 121 patients with MS (age 25-65 yr) living in Queensland, Australia was conducted. Physical activity level, depression, fatigue and quality of life was assessed using a variety of quality of life and depression outcome measures. 52 participants performed at least two 30-min exercise sessions per wk (Exercisers) and 69 did not participate in regular physical activity (Non-exercisers). Exercisers reported favourable fatigue, depression and quality of life scores when compared to Non-exercisers. Significant weak correlations were found between both leisure-time and overall reported physical activity levels and some subscales of the quality of life and fatigue questionnaires.
Investigators conclude that participation in regular physical activity may positively influence fatigue, depression and quality of life scores in persons with MS.
