The Ottawa-Kemptville RONA MS Bike Tour is just around the corner on Saturday, August 6 to Sunday, August 7. MS volunteers ensure the success of this event! We are expecting over 700 cyclists and have a goal of raising over $485,000 for local programs and services and research for MS. In order to accomplish our goals we need more than 200 volunteers!

Volunteer Orientation

Please note there is a Volunteer Orientation evening on July 13, 2011 at 7pm at 1826 Woodward Drive. Please RSVP your attendance by checking off the appropriate response on the volunteer application form. This orientation is highly recommended for all new volunteers and mandatory for all check-in volunteers.

Event Day check-in

Please check-in on event day at the Volunteer table 15 minutes prior to your scheduled volunteer shift.

If you are unable to submit the signed form electronically, you can submit your application form prior to this completion and bring your parental consent on either the orientation date or the first day of your volunteering shift.

Volunteer Position Description

Positions are available at:
Carleton University, Kemptville College and at the MS Society Chapter.

Please note that the details of these positions may change.

If the position you are interested in is located in more than one location you are not required to cover all locations. But feel free!!

Bike Storage – Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Location: Kemptville College. We require volunteers on all three days. Friday involves getting the storage barn ready for the bikes. Saturday will be spent greeting the cyclists, taking their bikes and placing them into the barn. Sunday will be spent assisting cyclists in retrieving their bikes and helping tear down the bike storage set-up.

Check-in

Location: Carleton University. Check in cyclists and hand out appropriate fundraising prizes.

Check-in Runners – Saturday

Location: Carleton University. Assist the check-in volunteers with prize allotment, photocopying this will include getting necessary t-shirt sizes etc for cyclists.

Cheering Section – Saturday and Sunday

Location: Kemptville College on Saturday, Carleton University on Sunday This position involves cheering the cyclists as they arrive at Kemptville College on Saturday or on Sunday as they arrive at Carleton University. Some of these cyclists have biked over 180 km during the weekend, so the more energy and noise, the better. Please bring any items you wish such as: noise makers, signs, pom-poms etc

Coffee Station - Saturday

Location: Carleton Unviersity. Make the coffee for cyclists on Saturday.

Corn Husker – Saturday

Location: Kemptville College. Assist with husking the corn for the corn roast and getting site ready for corn roast.

Cyclist Check in - Saturday

Location: Kemptville College. Check-in cyclists and give them their check-in packages.

Floater

Location: Carleton University and Kemptville College. Assist with various event tasks.

Games Assistant - Saturday

Location: Kemptville College Provide instructions and encouragement for cyclists doing fun outdoor activities. These activities and games will be provided. Saturday afternoon in Kemptville

Garbage Patrol – Saturday, Sunday

Location: Carleton University and/or Kemptville College . Clearing off tables, picking up litter and replacing garbage bags to make the RONA MS Bike Tour clean and tidy!

Greeters – Saturday

Location: Carleton University . Greet MS Cyclists as they come through the door and direct them to the appropriate location. Provide information, directions, answer questions and direct volunteers to volunteer check-in. Ensure the participant traffic keeps flowing through the gymnasium. Assist the cyclists with getting all their necessary paperwork filled out properly before getting into the appropriate Check-in line. 

Luggage – Saturday and Sunday

Location: Carleton University and/or Kemptville College You will be assisting in loading luggage onto the trucks to be shipped to Kemptville College on Saturday. Once the luggage arrives at Kemptville volunteers will unload the truck, organize into rows then assist the cyclist in finding their luggage. On Sunday volunteers at Kemptville will take luggage and load onto the trucks. The volunteers will unload them at Carleton and assist cyclists in finding their luggage.

Lunch - Saturday

Location: Carleton University. Help prepare and serve lunch and clean up. No dishes required!

MS Boutique

Location: Carleton University and/or Kemptville College. Help sell MS merchandise and answer questions. You will be provided with a float and be able to accept cheques and credit cards

MS Office Clean up (formerly named:Organize and clean up - Monday) - Monday

Location: MS Society, Ottawa Chapter . Assist with the organization and clean up of all items from the RONA MS Bike Tour. Organize items to stay at office, put them away, and load items into trucks.

MS Office Pack-up - Friday

Location: MS Society, Ottawa Chapter: Help sort and organize all the items for the RONA MS Bike Tour. Assist with loading of the trucks.

Parking - Saturday

Location: Carleton University . All parking volunteers MUST be 18 years or older. Ensure restricted parking is left open to MS Event vehicles etc and direct cyclists and volunteers to the correct parking lots.

Photographer - Saturday

Location: Carleton University, En Route, Kempville College. Capture the RONA MS Bike Tour digitally or on film. Take candid and portrait shots of volunteers, site and Walkers.

Route Signage

Location: En Route. Help change route signage on RONA MS Bike Tour route.

Route Signage Set Up

Location: En Route. Help set up route signage for RONA MS Bike Tour Route.

Silent Auction – Saturday

Location: Kemptville College. On Saturday you will set up the silent auction tables at Kemptville College. During the day and/or evening you will monitor the sheets and answer questions. Once auction is over gather all paperwork and pack everything up.

Site Set Up

Location: Kemptville College and/or Carleton University . This position involves assisting in setting up the event by putting up signage, setting up tables, unloading the truck and moving items to various areas at each campus. This position requires you to be able to lift 5-7 kg. 

Site Take Down

Location: Kemptville College and/or Carleton University . This position involves assisting in tearing down after the event at both locations. You will be loading up the trucks, removing signage, general clean-up. This position requires you to be able to lift 5-7 kg.

Starting Line Assistant - Saturday

Location: Carleton University. Assist at the Start Line to ensure appropriate and safe departures of cyclists at timed intervals. Organize the cyclists into groups of 50 for departure.

Team MS Table – Saturday

Location: Carleton Universtiy and/or Kemptville College. Assist at the TeamMS station, where teams will come to get their team photo taken and the team captain can receive his/her gift. You will also assist to determine the winners of the various team prizes.

Volunteer Check in – Saturday and Sunday

Location: Carleton University and/or Kemptville Campus. Check-in all volunteers and direct them to the correct area. Give each volunteer their t-shirt and make sure they have signed the volunteer waiver and/or parental consent if required. Answer any question volunteers have throughout the day.

Volunteering with the MS Society is a great way to acquire new skills and build your resume while still helping out in a genuine way

There are a variety of reasons why a person might want to volunteer with the MS Society, but even though a person’s reasons are individual, the results of their volunteerism are enjoyed by many.

All volunteers at the RONA MS Bike Tour enjoy:

  • a great event volunteer t-shirt
  • being part of an event that benefits the lives of many
