Reesa, a long-standing Guest Speaker, reflects on her experience with multiple sclerosis and her involvement with the MS Read-A-Thon:
"I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis six years ago after having weird symptoms, such as numbness, on the right side of my body from my face down to my feet. An MRI confirmed that I had MS.
"One of my main symptoms is extreme fatigue. As a wife and mother of three daughters - Chloe, Gaby and Talia - it was important that my whole family pulled together to help around the house. I have had to learn to make adjustments and plan my days well in advance, but I always live by the saying: It is what it is.
"I've now been a guest speaker for the MS Read-A-Thon for about 5 years, but my family has been involved with the MS Society for more than 15 years - since my sister was first diagnosed with MS. Knowing that students and teachers are supporting the MS Read-A-Thon by reading and raising money means a lot to me. Not only are you helping by fundraising, but also raising awareness about this disease. I always tell the students they could be the one to find a cure to this disease - they could become researchers or doctors! I love going into the schools to talk with the students, because when I look out at their smiling faces, it's like they are medicine for me."
