Dr. Carlos Camara-Lemarroy

Assistant Professor

Dr. Carlos Camara-Lemarroy, University of Calgary

Dr. Carlos Camara-Lemarroy completed his internal medicine and neurology residencies at the UANL University Hospital in Monterrey, Mexico. He subsequently completed a two-year MS and neuroimmunology fellowship at the University of Calgary. His current research interests include the gut-brain axis, biomarkers and neuroprotection in MS and neuroinflammatory disorders of the CNS. The main focus of this work is translational, where basic neuroscience research is developed into clinical applications and novel therapies for MS and related disorders.

a) What is the focus of your research? How did you become interested in MS research?
I am interested in neuroprotection and repair. I focus on translational research - taking research insights from the bench to the clinic and back. I am a neurologist, and have a particular interest in MS. During my clinical training, I witnessed the difficulties in MS management and diagnosis, particularly in a low-incidence and low-resources setting. I have been interested in research since early in my pre-graduate medical training.

b) What inspires you to continue advancing research in this field?
I recognize that there is still a long way to go in terms of meaningful therapies for restoration of function in neurodegenerative diseases such as MS.

c) How do you hope to change the lives of people living with MS through your research?
I hope the outcomes of my research will improve the quality of life of those living with MS.

d) What do you enjoy most about your research? What are some of the challenges you face?
I enjoy the multidisciplinary environment along with the privilege to work both in the clinic and the lab. It is a challenge to get the needed funding to conduct research, which is why I am thankful for the support from the MS Society of Canada. Investigator-led programs have their own set of challenges – securing funding to support the research is an example.

e) How important is the support from the MS Society of Canada in your research?
Support from the MS Society of Canada is fundamental- it is allowing my lab to establish itself within the highly competitive field.
