Coordinator, Development - Contract

Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world, making MS Canada’s disease. The MS Society of Canada is the country’s leading MS advocate, funding leading research in MS and programs & services that help people live well with the disease.

Reporting to the Manager, Signature Events, the Coordinator, Development is responsible for developing, executing, evaluating and growing revenue and engagement in assigned MS Society events in the Interior and Northern regions. As an integral member of the BCY development team, this position is also responsible for the support of other fund development initiatives, including but not limited to MS Awareness Month, miscellaneous fundraising events and community fundraising events.

This position is a position of trust. The incumbent will be required to complete the screening process including completion of appropriate background checks in compliance with the National Screening Measures Policy.


Participant Engagement and Stewardship

  • Develops and manages strong relationships between the MS Society and event fundraisers, sponsors, volunteers and community groups.
  • Maximizes new team and participant recruitment through a variety of recruitment initiatives
  • Maximizes participant retention with relationship building activities throughout the year
  • Stewards participants and teams on a regular basis to increase revenue and long-term value, encourage engagement and connection to the Society.
  • Meets or exceeds revenue targets for the assigned events and other fundraising activities across both regions
  • Communicates with participants and teams on a regular basis to encourage engagement and connection to the Society

Event Coordination

  • Primary coordinator for all aspects of assigned MS Society Walks in partnership with volunteer committees
  • Works collaboratively with the Manager, Signature Events to ensure the event plans and planning documents are kept up to date to deliver proper tracking of events planning progress to management team, including but not limited to:
  • o Site plans, routes, equipment, signage, entertainment, food, event agendas
  • o Safety and emergency protocols
  • o Volunteer requirements
  • Works with committee members to ensure the smooth execution of event logistics
  • Coordinates MS Walk equipment procurement, permits, site insurance and all other necessary bookings and documentation
  • Prepares and executes packing lists in partnership with committee to ensure that all supplies are at the event
  • Collaborates with the BC & Yukon communications team on marketing and communication strategies in support of fundraising events
  • Leads on special projects as per directed by manager, providing direction and coordination to implement other MS Society events and initiatives


  • Works with Manager, Leadership Giving and Corporate Relations to secure past sponsorship and cultivate new sponsorship opportunities within the established sponsorship framework for MS Walk and Miscellaneous Fundraising Events
  • Works with the Organizing Committees to generate leads and build relationships in the community
  • Ensures benefits of sponsorship outlined in the agreements are delivered
  • Works to help sponsors activate their engagement in the event

Volunteer Development

  • Works in collaboration with the Coordinator, Volunteer Engagement to recruit Organizing Committee members
  • Works with volunteer committees throughout the event cycle, ensuring that committee members have the information and support that they need to succeed in their role.
  • Works with the Coordinator, Volunteer Engagement to identify all day of event volunteer needs and recruit for day of event requirements
  • Works with volunteers and Programs & Services team to identify community champions for each walk

Miscellaneous, Third Party and I Challenge Event Support

  • Supports the coordination and implementation of I Challenge (third party fundraising events) in the regions
  • Works with BC & Yukon staff lead to ensure Third Party and I Challenge events are coordinated within MS Society Community Fundraising Event Guidelines
  • Supports participants as they work towards their fundraising goals
  • Organizes miscellaneous community fundraising events (i.e. Taste of Nelson) as appropriate

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Will provide support and direction to volunteers


  • University Degree or College Diploma with 2-3 years’ experience in the coordination of fundraising events within a not-for-profit environment, or the equivalent education and experience
  • Must possess a valid class 5 BC Driver’s License, have access to a reliable vehicle and have the ability to travel
  • Proven ability to coordinate and complete events on a timely basis
  • Proven ability to manage and work successfully with volunteers, event participants and committees
  • Able to work as part of a team in a fast paced, high pressure, professional environment
  • Strong customer service and relationship building skills with diverse groups – individuals, corporate, volunteer groups
  • Good organizational ability, attention to detail and ability to prioritize effectively
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with all Microsoft Office programs and experience working in a database system
  • Excellent project, budget, and time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks

Special Considerations:

  • This position requires travel throughout the Interior and occasional travel to the Northern region. Occasional travel to the BC & Yukon Division office in Burnaby and travel to conferences and meetings as appropriate
  • Ability to travel is mandatory
  • Occasional evening or weekend work will be required as necessary to ensure the success of the events in this portfolio
  • Physical demands of special events including packing, lifting carrying and loading
