Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator (PoNS)

A non-invasive medical device that electrically stimulates the surface of the tongue and excites neural activity in the brain. This process is believed to enhance brain neuroplasticity, in other words, it can help the brain to restructure, relearn, and potentially restore lost function. There is some evidence that the use of PoNS in combination with physical and/or cognitive therapy can improve balance and cognitive function in people living with MS, though not everyone is responsive to this treatment.

Health Canada has approved the use of PoNS, marketed by Helius Medical Technologies, for short-term treatment (14 weeks) of gait deficit in MS. The cost of therapy varies from clinic to clinic. This therapy is currently not covered by provincial drug programs however financial assistance may be available through select clinics
