The MS Society of Canada has resources available online that covers information about health and life insurance, describing strategies for acquiring insurance as well as alternatives to insurance coverage and a variety of finance-related topics to help individuals meet the financial challenges that can accompany MS:

Life Insurance Information:

  • Some life insurance policies may have disability waivers and may allow a person to stop premium payments if disabled for six months or longer while maintaining coverage
  • Some policies have dismemberment coverage that provides a lump sum if one loses vision, hearing or a limb, etc.
  • Many policies include a 'cash out' clause which allows the terminally ill policy holder to access up to one half of the death benefits prior to the actual death of the policy holder (to help cover hospitalization and treatment costs)


OmbudService for Life & Health Insurance (OLHI): The OLHI is a national independent complaint resolution and information service for insurance products and services, including life, disability, employee health benefits, travel, and insurance investment products such as annuities and segregated funds.
