Special Coverage of a Non-Listed Drug Product (Exceptional Access Program)

You may need a drug thatÍs not currently covered by the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB).

In this case, you can get help paying for it when you qualify for the Exceptional Access Program.

As a first step to getting this help, you and your doctor can search the Formulary online to make sure the drug you need is covered through the Exceptional Access Program. (The Formulary is the official list of drugs covered by Ontario.)

Doctor must send a letter requesting coverage on behalf of patient. Approval must be given before patient applies for ODB or Trillium coverage. The patient must have valid Ontario Health Insurance (OHIP). The process must be renewed annually.

Who can apply?

  • People 65 years of age and older
  • Residents of long-term care facilities
  • Residents of Homes for Special Care
  • People receiving professional services under the Home Care Program
  • Social assistance recipients (Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)
  • Trillium Drug Program recipients
