Massage Therapy and Multiple Sclerosis

MS affects everyone differently with symptoms that can include fatigue, pain, spasticity, pressure sores, constipation, anxiety, and depression. Although massage therapy will not change the course of MS and is not a substitute for disease-modifying therapies, many people living with MS report that receiving regular massage has a positive effect on their health, wellbeing and quality of life. Pain is reduced, spasticity is relaxed, the effects of constipation are lessened, and joint range of motion is increased. Research shows that in addition to energy, self-esteem, and mood becoming better, anxiety and depression is reduced. As with any new treatment, your medical team should be consulted before starting any new treatments.

Many private health plans will cover massage, and many schools of massage therapy offer low-cost sessions by students. Here are some schools that offer this service. If there is a massage therapy school in your area that's not listed, contact the school directly to see if they offer this to people living with MS.
