Self-Help and Social Groups - Northern Alberta & Northwest Territories

Looking for support in your community? Why not join a self help group? Self Help Groups are a wonderful way to connect to other people affected by MS to exchange information, share stories, learn from each other, and socialize.

If you are interested in starting a Self Help Group in your community, please call us at 1-800-268-7582 to receive more information.

There are many Self Help Groups across Northern Alberta & the Northwest Territories. These Self Help Groups meet in the following communities:

Edmonton and Capital Region

Barrhead MS Community Support Group

Where: Keir Continuing Care Centre, 5336 59 Avenue, Barrhead, AB, in the Dining Room
When: Meeting dates vary between the third Monday or Wednesday of the month – please call to confirm the dates. (1:30 pm – 3:30 pm)

Group Description: Members meet to share information on MS, build connections and create new friendships. New members are encouraged to contact Dwight for more information on the group and to confirm when they will be meeting.

MS Social for Young Adults

Where: Campio Brewing,10257 105 st Edmonton, AB
When: The third Monday of every month (7:00pm)

Group Description: Socialize with other young people affected by MS. Whether you're newly diagnosed, have had MS for years or have a friend, family member or spouse living with MS, join us for a monthly meet up at Campio Brewing for a night of drinks, food and fun!

Sherwood Park MS Support Group

Where: Strathcona County Health Centre, 2 Brower Drive, Sherwood Park
When: First and Third Wednesday of each month (10:00 am – 12:00 pm)

Group Description: Are you affected by MS or do you know someone who is? Support groups provide a safe place to gather resources, socialize, and freely and confidentially share with other individuals who have similar experiences.

West End Edmonton MS Support Group

Where: Hosanna Lutheran Church, 9009 163 Street, Edmonton
When: 4th Wednesday of each month except July and August (1:00 pm – 3:00 pm)

Fort McMurray/Wood Buffalo Area

MS Support Group

Where: Eagle Ridge YMCA - located at 301 Sparrow Hawk Drive (doors will be locked, please call Kerry to be let in)
When: The second Tuesday of every month (7:30 pm - 9:00 pm)

Group Description: This group is for persons living with MS and/or their caregivers. New members are encouraged to come join in. Please call Kerry for more information.

Lakeland Region

Bonnyville/Cold Lake Community Support Group

Where: Location changes monthly, please call the office to confirm location.
When: Third Wednesday of each month, except July and August (12:00 pm – 2:00 pm)

Group Description: Are you affected by MS or know someone who is? The MS Society offers support an self-help groups that provide a safe place to gather resources, socialize, and confidentially share with other individuals who have similar experiences. Individuals who are new to or do not regularly attend a group are encouraged to confirm meeting times and locations as these may vary.

Lloydminster Region

Coffee Crew Lloydminster

Where: Wendy’s Restaurant - 5602-44 Street (location may change)
When: 1St. Wednesday of every month, except July/August (1:30 pm – 3:00 pm)

Group Description: A Relaxed and informal gathering for all. Everyone is welcome to receive and share ms information and other topics.

South and North Peace Region

Grande Prairie Daytime Support Group

Where: MS Society office, #103, 10901 – 100 Street, Grande Prairie
When: Third Friday of each month, except July, August and December (1:00 pm – 3:00 pm)

Grande Prairie Evening Support Group

Where: MS Society office, #103, 10901 – 100 Street, Grande Prairie
When: Third Monday of each month, except June, July and December (7:00 – 8:00 pm)

North Peace Support Group

Where: Dunvegan Motor Inn Board Room, 9812-113 Street, Fairview
When: Third Friday of each month, except June, July and December (6:30 – 8:00 pm)

Group Description: This large group meets monthly and provides support to the North Peace. Please call Carla to confirm meeting dates.

Yellowknife - Northwest Territories

Yellowknife Community Group (Support) Meetings

Where: Baker Community Centre 5710 Franklin Avenue, Yellowknife NT
When: Meet the third Thursday of each month from 6:30-8:00pm, except June, July and August)

Group Description: Informal get together to discuss what is happening in the NWT for MS, followed by an open discussion from the participants on whatever topic comes up. A chance to talk to other people who share, or have shared, similar experiences.
