Looking for support in your community? Why not join a self help group? Self Help Groups are a wonderful way to connect to other people affected by MS to exchange information, share stories, learn from each other, and socialize.

There are 18 Self Help Groups throughout the Lower Mainland. These Self Help Groups meet in the following communities:

Burnaby Self Help Group

Where: Cliff Avenue United Church -1600 Cliff Avenue, Burnaby, BC V5A 2K2

When: First Tuesday of every month except July and August (11:30 am - 2:00 pm)

Group Description: This larger group meets to socialize, eat lunch together, and discuss different topics. If you are interested in joining this group, feel free to contact Irene.

Burnaby Metrotown Self Help Group

Where: Metrotown - 4700 Kingsway, Burnaby, BC V5H 4N2 (Community Meeting Room #460)

When: Every Friday unless there is a public holiday (1:30 - 3:30 pm)

Group Description: This mid-sized social group has been meeting for almost 20 years. Members meet to share information, build connections, and create new friendships. Occasionally, they try to organize guest speakers to discuss interesting topics. If you are interested in joining this group, feel free to contact Sam.

Langley Self Help Group

Where: WINGS Langley - 19696 Fraser Hwy, Langley, BC V3A 4C7

When: Third Tuesday of every month except June - August (11:30 am - 1:30 pm)

Group Description: This mid-sized social group is aimed at providing a time and place for people with MS to discuss the disease and other things in life. Every so often, they get educational speakers to make presentations on interesting topics. They usually have a summer picnic around June and a Christmas party in December. North Shore Self Help Group

Where: Summerhill Retirement Residence - 135 West 15th Street, North Vancouver, BC V7M 1R7

When: Fourth Wednesday of every month (12:00 - 2:00 pm)

Group Description: This large social group likes to have fun as well as share valuable information. Members have a good time talking with others who understand because they have gone through similar experiences. They also hold many special events such as a Chinese Luncheon in June, a picnic in Larson Park in August, and a Christmas dinner in December. North Shore Self Help Group - "Success MS"

Where: Evergreen House - 231 15th Street E, North Vancouver, BC V7L 2L7 (Boardroom in the basement)

When: First Wednesday of every month (10:00 am - 12:00 pm)

Group Description: This larger social group is definitely upbeat and success oriented, offering support and education. They organize guest speakers to discuss anything from personal issues to alternative therapy and medication. One of their most memorable activities is watching the HSBC Celebration of Lights together. If you are interested in joining this group, feel free to contact Richard.

North Shore - "MS Companions"

Group Description: Our mid-sized social group loves to support every member through discussion and sharing of experiences. Nobody ever feels alone because everyone is so supportive and has shared similar experiences. Additionally, our group is great to join if you are interested in information on MS and ongoing medical research. Every day is memorable for us. Sunshine Coasters MS Self Help Group

Group Description: We are the Sunshine Coasters MS Self Help Group. We try to remain positive while at the same time, we are there for one another - no matter what! We usually meet at different members accessible homes, but in December we get together for our year end luncheon. We share ideas and welcome informative presentations. Conversations are kept confidential, and members can feel secure with the knowledge that, "what is said here, stays here". Richmond Self Help Group

Group Description: This larger group loves to talk about all sorts of things. It provides an opportunity to share ideas and experiences in a comfortable and encouraging environment. Surrey Self Help Group

Where: Fleetwood Christian Reform Church - 9165 160 Street, Surrey, BC V4N 2X7

Group Description: This larger group loves to socialize and compare notes on how to cope with MS. Sometimes they organize a guest speaker, watch a video or even play a game. Every year, they have a BBQ in early July and a Christmas dinner. They are always looking for more members. If you are interested in joining this group, feel free to contact Michael.

Tri-Cities Self Help Group

Where: Dufferin Care Centre - 1131 Dufferin Street, Coquitlam, BC V3B 7X5 (off of Packard St)

When: First Tuesday of every month (10:00 am - 12:00 pm)

Group Description: This larger support group has a very positive and proactive outlook. Their meetings consist of round table talks to catch up, ask questions or just let out some steam. Occasionally, they invite guest speakers for more information. They also have a picnic in September or October and a Christmas party every year. White Rock Self Help Group

Kitsilano Self Help Group

Group Description: Drop-in, meets every Friday at the Kitsilano Community Centre.

Farsi Self Help Group

Where: Metrotown - 4700 Kingsway, Burnaby, BC V5H 4N2 (Community Meeting Room #460)

When: First and third Friday of every month (1:30 - 3:30 pm)

Group Description: The Farsi Self Help Group is established in response to the growing number of Farsi speaking MS patients in Lower Mainland. Presently we meet at the Community Meeting Room (Gallery level above Sears) in Metrotown every Friday between the hours of 1-3 PM. This is an informal meeting and it is geared toward sharing information and exchanging ideas to ease the burden of MS in our daily lives. We love to hear from you or meet you in person any Friday. Younger Persons Living with MS Groups (18 - 45 yrs)

Where: Lower Mainland Chapter Office -1103 - 4720 Kingsway, Metrotower II, Burnaby

When: One Saturday or Sunday per month

Group Description: These facilitated groups run September - June, and meetings are held at the MS Society Lower Mainland Chapter office.

Maple Ridge/ Pitt Meadows Self Help Group - "Hope and Balance"

Where: Maple Ridge Public Library, 22470 Dewdney Trunk R, Maple Ridge, BC V2X 7X7

When: Second Thursday of every month except for July and August (1:00 - 2:30 pm)

Group Description: This all-welcoming group invites people of all ages from Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and the outlying areas. The name "Hope and Balance" was collaboratively chosen to reflect the group's supportive and encouraging nature. The group emphasizes confidentiality and privacy as members discuss strategies to dealing with new therapies, exercise, yoga, diet, volunteering, books & coping with hardships. Everyone is invited. New Westminister Self Help Group

Where: Waves Coffee House - 715 Columbia Street, New Westminster, BC V3M 1B2

When: Every third Thursday of the month (9:30 am - 11:30 am)
